BET, THE SPHINX AND CULTURAL LARCENY

Black Entertainment Television presented the 2016 BET Awards on Sunday June 26, 2016. Jesse Williams, a performer from TV’s Gray’s Anatomy series, was presented the Humanitarian Award and during his speech claimed “this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight and out of mind while extracting our culture…demeaning our creations then stealing them…”

Music as a Cultural Treasure

One of the special abilities of the mythical Sphinx is as a guardian of treasures.

Every year for the past 20 years the Detroit sponsored Sphinx Competition opens for all non-white (specifically, African American and Latino) Junior High, High School, and College-age string players residing in the U.S.

The Sphinx Competition offers young non-white classical string players “a chance to compete under the guidance of an internationally renowned panel of judges and to perform with established professional musicians in a competition setting. Its primary goals are to encourage, develop and recognize classical music talent in the (non-white) Black and Latino communities.

The winners receive up to a $50,000 cash prize and solo appearances with major orchestras.

The repertoire for the 20th annual competition (typical) includes works by white composers such as Bach (Partitas, Sonatas and Suites), Lalo, Bruch, Piazzolla, and Villa-Lobos. This year a composition by black composer, William Grant Still is included, even though he appropriated white instruments and music forms and lexicon from cantata to symphony.

The violin in its present form emerged in early 16th-Century white Northern Italy, The invention of wire-wound strings (fine wire around a thin gut core), around 1660 in Bologna, allowed for a finer bass sound than was possible with purely gut strings and this new white technology made possible for white craftsmen to create the cello.

It is unimaginable that a Grammy award winning white musician at the Grammy Awards Program would slide into a hate speech decrying the non-white defalcation of white culture and the commandeering by Winton Marsalis of our white Baroque music.

The YMCA and the “extracting of culture”

In June of 1844, a white gentleman in London named George Williams, no relation to Jesse, founded the first YMCA (Young Men’s Christion Association). Its purpose; “the improving of the spiritual condition of young men… Within 7 years YMCAs also existed in Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States.

In 1891 at the YMCA Training Center in Springfield Massachusetts a white physical education professor named James Naismith, invented basketball while trying to keep his gym class active indoors on a rainy day.

Today, as represented by the NBA, basketball has become a 95 % plus non-white sport. Peruse any NBA team roster and look for white faces, especially white faces not imported from Russia, China, etc.

LeBron James as reported on Forbes Lists, has an annual salary of ~ $24 million and endorsements of ~ $54 million for a total yearly income of $77 million.

It is unimaginable that at the 2015 ESPY (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Award) awards ceremony Kevin Harvick, the white professional stock car racing driver, during his ESPY Award acceptance speech would have excoriated African Americans for expropriating the great white game of basketball invented at the white cultural pillar called the YMCA.

War and Taxes

Jesse Williams also said, “There has been no war that we have not fought and died on the front lines of. There has been no job we haven’t done. There is no tax they haven’t leveed against us.”

There has been no war that white Americans have not fought and died on the front lines, including one that concluded 150 years ago. It was fought essentially against black slavery. The current estimate is that 620,000 men died during the Civil War; more than all other American wars combined.

If one calculated a ratio to today’s US population, that would be six million, two hundred twenty-two thousand (6 220,000) mostly white deaths and nobody knows how many horrible injuries in a war against black slavery. Even 150 years ago the majority of Americans believed black lives matter, enough to fight a ruinous war that ended slavery.

50 years ago we in Michigan were the first to hear about President Johnson’s grandiose scheme for federal intervention that “would knock down racial barriers, end poverty, feed the hungry, provide care for the elderly, …” As a college age Christian, of course I supported the goals of the “Great Society” and the “War on Poverty.”

The investment so far, Mr. Williams, leveed substantially against whites, totals $22 trillion.

The recent BET Jesse Williams rant is clearly inaccurate in many regards. It may be nescient and represent the media’s projection bias towards white flyover America. Perhaps as actress Stacey Dash has publicly opined, the white owned BET and Mr. Williams are racist and this myopic view is intentional. One wonders what the media response would be to a WET, white entertainment television.

The Williams’ selective and biased “cut and paste” statements about war, taxes and cultural extraction are spurious and not RATIO/NAL.
